Shibori means "to wring, squeeze and press" in Japanese. While the word "shibori" is often associated with the famous style of fabric dying particular to Japan, it in fact encompasses a wide gamut of fabric manipulation and dying found worldwide. The ancient art of manipulating cloth through weaving, tying, stitching, knotting or otherwise securing it, and then dyeing it to achieve specific coloured patterns binds cultures across space and time.

This class is offered to both hand weavers and seamstresses who want to learn how to make this cloth.

In weaving by threading in a specific draft, your weaving will be compressed and then dyed.

Day 1: Weaving wind on warp and getting ready to weave. Looms are taken home to complete weaving.

Day 2: Bring weaving to class and we will prepare for dyeing.

Day 3: Bring back for finishing techniques.

(For rigid heddle and 4-shaft weavers. Beginners are welcome!)

In sewing by folding and clamping or stitching in a specific way, and then dyeing, interesting designs are made.

Day 1: Plan designs you want on the 100% cotton fabric (ivory or white). Fabric is then taken home to complete the beginning process.

Day 2: Bring fabric back to class and we will prepare for dyeing.

Day 3: Bring back for finishing techniques.

Cost for Supplies is $20 and do to the instructor the first day of class.
