Intermediate/Advanced IKAT Weaving

with Diane Nelson

$129

Intermediate/Advanced IKAT Weaving
Thursday, June 5, 12 and 19
2 Sessions: 1:30P-4:30P OR 5:30P-8:30P
Cost: $129 + cost of materials (see below) due the first day of class
Instructor: Diane Nelson and Peggy Skinner

Ikat fabric is a dyeing technique used to create a distinct style of textile patterns. Ikat is done by adding resist dyeing sections to the yarns prior to weaving the fabric.

In Ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed. A characteristic of Ikat textiles is a “blurriness” to the design.

We will learn the techniques of dyeing in the Ikat way and then plan and prepare the warp and weft to be dyed. Weaving will complete the project.

Choice of projects will be between a table runner (made of 2 kinds of cotton) or a scarf (made of bamboo and tencel).

Materials cost for fiber for a table runner is $15 due the first day of class.

Materials cost for fiber for a scarf is $25 due the first day of class.

How the days will flow:

Day 1: Planning and winding warp and adding the resists for both warp and weft and dyeing.

Day 2: We will put warps on the loom and prepare weft for weaving.

Day 3: Weaving will be completed - and finishing done.

Project can be woven on a 4-shaft table loom or rigid heddle.
