This 2-day course (over 2 consecutive Saturday's) will introduce various creative techniques for customized visible mending. We will cover sashiko, a Japanese technique for patching and strengthening woven fabric, and darning, a technique for weaving new cloth in place to cover holes on knit fabrics. We will play with color, pattern, and shape to find your personal mending style. You will learn how to create a robust mend that will last for years, and fit the material and look of your garment.
Session 1:
- Darning
- Basic darning
- Color blocking
- Twill weaves and houndstooth
- Shape darning- hearts, stars
Session 2:
- Sashiko for denim repair
- Basting stitch + whip stitch to patch
- Sashiko patterns to strengthen/enhance
- Stairs + boxes + alternating patterns
- Spirals/circles
- Traditional sashiko patterns
- Scotch darning - blanket stitch darning
You are encouraged to bring damaged clothing to class to practice these skills on your own wardrobe and discuss how to approach your mends. We also ask that students bring a good scissors.

Do you own a rigid heddle loom and can’t remember how to warp it? This is the class for you!
This class will take you step by step through the Direct Warping process of a rigid heddle loom. Bring in your own loom or BUY ONE and you will leave with a successfully warped loom. If you intend to purchase a loom, we will need to know the Thursday before the class so we can assemble a Cricket ahead of time for use during the class.
All threads are provided and you will also leave with a handout to aid you when you are back at home.
This class is for people who already have weaving experience and want a refresher course on how to warp a loom.
